Battery Dance is pleased to offer two touring programs:
1.
Hofmann Dances is a visually striking, multidisciplinary program featuring three original works inspired by Hans Hofmann, the influential 20th-century painter and teacher often described as the father of Abstract Expressionism. Drawing from Hofmann’s groundbreaking theories of space, color, and “push and pull,” the program explores how visual art principles can be translated into kinetic form.
The program includes:
Wind in the Olive Grove by Saeed Hani, an evocative work shaped by color, musicality, and poetic abstraction;
A Certain Mood by Tsai Hsi Hung, which captures Hofmann’s compositional clarity and spatial tension through refined movement; and
Above Deep Waters by Christopher Núñez, a physically dynamic exploration of momentum, depth, and collective force inspired by Hofmann’s approach to structure and energy.
Designed to be presented in theaters, and well suited for partnerships with museums and visual art institutions — especially in cities where Hofmann’s work is held in major collections — Hofmann Dances offers presenters a sophisticated, accessible program that bridges modern art and contemporary dance, translating visual legacy into movement.
2.
New Works is a dynamic touring program showcasing original commissions by a diverse group of emerging and mid-career choreographic voices. Each work reflects Battery Dance’s commitment to artistic innovation, global perspective, and the exploration of identity, connection, and transformation.
The program features the following pieces:
Empty Hand by Damani Pompey, a powerful ensemble work developed during a residency at Vassar College. Rooted in concepts of grief, release, and collective presence, the piece invites audiences into a shared space of vulnerability and renewal.
Frontiers by Rutkay Özpinar confronts the idea of borders — geographical, cultural, and personal — blending contemporary movement with influences from Turkish folk dance to imagine a more empathetic, borderless future.
Happy to Be Alive With You by Dolly Sfeir, a lyrical and emotionally resonant work shaped by memory, music, and human connection.
On-Still by Faizah Grootens, a searching and introspective piece that explores belonging, inner tension, and the coexistence of struggle and beauty.
Together, New Works offers presenters a compelling snapshot of contemporary dance today — bold, international in scope, and deeply human — while underscoring Battery Dance’s enduring role as a champion of new voices and creative exchange.
