Alma String Quartet is a bold and inventive chamber ensemble bringing fresh energy, depth, and imagination to the string quartet tradition. Based in Havana and founded in 2016 by Amaya Justiz, the Quartet has quickly emerged as one of Cuba’s most compelling classical ensembles, recognized for performances that combine technical command, rhythmic vitality, and expressive immediacy.

The Quartet’s artistry is rooted in a deep mastery of the classical canon — from Haydn and Mozart through 20th-century repertoire — while also serving as a vital platform for contemporary music, particularly works by Cuban composers. Central to their identity is an ongoing artistic relationship with legendary composer Leo Brouwer, who has written and curated repertoire specifically for the ensemble through his Ediciones Espiral Eterna. The Alma have become a leading interpreter of Brouwer’s chamber music, bringing clarity, intensity, and stylistic authority to works that fuse modernism, Afro-Cuban rhythm, and lyrical abstraction.

Alma String Quartet are winners of Cuba’s “Musicalia” competition, awarded First Prize in the String Chamber Music category, in recognition of their technical proficiency and interpretative excellence. The Quartet has been featured at prestigious festivals, including Festival La Ruta de Mozart and the Mozart-Havana Festival, as well as at the Zurich Classical Guitar Festival in Switzerland. In 2025-2026, the Quartet expands its international profile with high-profile engagements at The Joyce Theater in New York City, performing live with Havana’s celebrated Malpaso Dance Company to perform newly commissioned works.

Equally at home in traditional concert halls and collaborative performance contexts, Alma String Quartet represents a new generation of chamber musicians: fearless, curious, and deeply connected to their cultural roots. With a sound that is both refined and electrifying, the Quartet offers a compelling blend of tradition, innovation, and artistic urgency.
